Prep for Scale AI's speed-focused loop - timed coding, a practical build round, debugging an unfamiliar codebase, and system design for AI data and evaluation pipelines.
Scale AI sells data, evaluation, and agent infrastructure to frontier AI labs, enterprises, and government customers, and its engineering work follows from that: task-routing and quality systems for large contributor workforces, pipelines that turn human and model output into training and evaluation data, LLM evaluation harnesses, and enterprise agent platforms. Candidate reports describe a loop that rewards speed and working code: an online coding assessment (usually HackerRank), a hiring manager screen, then a virtual onsite of four to five rounds - algorithms (often two Medium problems in an hour), a practical build round where you implement a small system with many rules in about an hour, a debugging round in an unfamiliar multi-file codebase, system design, and a values interview built on Scale's published credo. The process is reported to take about three weeks. Scale's credo stresses customer focus, quality, and impact per unit of effort ('Find the 20%'), and the behavioral round is reported to probe ownership and urgency. Since Meta's 2025 investment Scale has said it remains independent and model-agnostic, so expect questions about why Scale and which business line you want to join.
Timed assessment plus an onsite round reported as two Mediums in an hour. Drill intervals, scheduling, heaps, and hash maps until you can finish a Medium in 20-25 minutes.
The practical build round is low-level design under time pressure: model the entities and rules, keep state transitions explicit, and leave room for the next rule. A card-game or scheduler simulation is good practice.
AI data and evaluation systems: annotation and review pipelines, task routing to a large workforce, LLM evaluation harnesses, quality scoring. Know queues, idempotent workers, and how to measure data quality.
One of the two languages candidates report in the debugging round, and widely used on ML and data teams.
The other reported debugging-round language and common on product and full-stack teams. Be able to read an unfamiliar TypeScript codebase quickly.
Prepare stories mapped to the credo: a customer you won back, a quality bar you held, a time you cut work that had no impact, and an urgent problem you owned end to end.
Enterprise and agent roles touch RAG, tool-using agents, and evals; system design prompts may raise hallucination and data-quality checks. Useful vocabulary even outside AI teams.
Surfaces in system design - storing tasks, labels, and review state, and querying them for quality metrics.
Curated walkthroughs for the bounded designs that show up in Scale AI's system design rounds. Capacity estimation, architecture, deep-dives, and trade-offs.
Partitions, consumer groups, replication, retention, and the exactly-once myth - the implementation details Kafka users gloss over until they don't.
Batch vs streaming, lambda vs kappa, the warehouse-vs-lakehouse decision, and dimension modeling that survives schema drift.
Five algorithms, three sharding strategies, one fail-open vs fail-closed decision. The bounded design that surfaces in every backend interview loop.
Online vs batch inference, GPU utilization tricks, autoscaling for spiky load, A/B testing models, and the feature store that decouples training from serving.
Sample STAR answers, common prompts, pitfalls, and follow-up strategies for the behavioral themes that decide Scale AI's loop.
Tested at every level, scored harder at senior. Did you take responsibility for outcomes - or just for tasks?
The most-asked Amazon LP. Interviewers screen for evidence you reasoned about end-user impact, not just shipped a feature.
Speed matters. But the principle is reversible-vs-irreversible reasoning, not 'I work fast.' Get this distinction wrong and the answer reads as reckless.
Amazon's outcome bar: focus on the key inputs, deliver them with the right quality and on time, and rise to the occasion when things get hard - never settle.
Interviewers screen for a high bar you raised for others - not perfectionism on your own work. The trick is showing high standards without tanking delivery.

Behavioral and system design rounds reward practice with a live AI interviewer that probes follow-ups, not silent reading.
Start an AI mock interview →Candidates describe about an hour to build a small working system from a spec with many rules - a card-game simulation is the most-cited example, with task schedulers and rate-limited API integrations also reported. It tests whether you can turn requirements into clean, working code fast. Practise by building a rules-heavy simulation in your interview language with a timer running.
Practise reading unfamiliar multi-file Python and TypeScript code. Start from the entry point, run or reason through one failing path, and form a hypothesis before editing. Candidates report two or three logic bugs in an hour, so a methodical approach beats reading every file.
In June 2025 Meta invested in Scale at a valuation Scale put at over $29 billion and founder Alexandr Wang joined Meta. Scale said it remains independent and model-agnostic. For a candidate, the practical questions are which business line is growing, who the team's customers are, and how equity is valued now - ask the recruiter directly.
Scale's careers page lists six values: Earn Customer Love, Team Flow, Quality is Our Cheat Code, Find the 20%, Write the Market, and Three Moves Ahead. The values interview is reported to be built on them, so have one specific story for each, with measurable results.
Posted SF/NY base ranges run from about $124K-$162K for new grads to $252K-$315K for staff, and Levels.fyi shows equity growing to about half of total comp at senior levels. The equity is private stock. See the Scale AI comp page for level bands and caveats.
