Platform engineers build the internal infrastructure other teams ship on: compute platforms, CI/CD, service meshes, observability, and the paved roads that make the org faster. Interviews weight distributed-systems fundamentals, infrastructure primitives, and operational judgment over product coding. Platform coding screens favor solid fundamentals and stateful data-structure design (rate limiters, caches, schedulers) over exotic algorithms.
Platform engineers are expected to design and reason about the building blocks themselves - load balancers, DNS, API gateways, queues, caches, storage, and the observability plane that watches them all.
Platform teams own reliability for everyone else, so loops probe incident ownership, blameless retro instincts, and acting under ambiguity.
