How to Pass a Take-Home Coding Assignment in the AI Era

If you interviewed for an engineering role in 2021, odds are you spent most of your prep time on LeetCode. If you interview in 2026, odds are at least one of your rounds will be a take-home assignment or a debug-and-review exercise. The shift is not an accident. Traditional coding problems have lost a lot of their signal now that any candidate can paste the prompt into an AI assistant and get a working solution in seconds. Interviewers have noticed. The format is changing.

Take-homes are not new - they existed long before AI tools - but they are newly everywhere, and what interviewers look for has shifted. The bar used to be "can this person solve the problem." The bar now is "can this person make good engineering decisions in a realistic setting." These are different skills, and passing take-homes in 2026 requires understanding the difference.

This post is the honest guide. What the new bar actually is, how to use AI tools appropriately without torpedoing your candidacy, the mistakes that get otherwise-qualified people rejected, and a practical checklist for submitting work you are proud of.


Why Take-Homes Are Back

Three things happened at roughly the same time.

First, AI coding assistants got good enough that a well-prepared candidate could sail through most LeetCode-style problems in a live interview without actually being strong. Interviewers started seeing candidates whose on-paper signal was great and whose real-world performance was not.

Second, remote work made on-site whiteboarding less viable. Remote coding interviews with screen sharing were always awkward, and AI tools made them unreliable signal.

Third, hiring managers started realizing that the things that actually predict job performance - code quality under ambiguity, testing discipline, PR hygiene, ability to read and modify existing code - are not what a 45-minute algorithm puzzle measures anyway.

The result is a market where the hardest-to-fake parts of an interview are take-homes (where the work product is the signal) and debug/review rounds (where the task is not "write code from scratch" but "understand this existing system"). Your prep strategy should reflect that.


What Interviewers Are Actually Grading

Almost every take-home rubric in 2026 looks something like this, even if the company does not publish it explicitly.

1. Does the solution work?

Baseline. If the happy path does not run, nothing else matters. This is the easiest part to get right and the most embarrassing to get wrong.

2. Does it handle the obvious edge cases?

Empty inputs, null values, malformed data, boundary conditions. Senior candidates who miss edge cases are much more concerning than junior ones who do.

3. Is the code readable?

Names make sense. Functions are cohesive. The structure reflects the problem, not whatever came out of your AI assistant in one pass. A reviewer should be able to skim the solution and understand what it does without heavy mental lifting.

4. Are the tests meaningful?

Tests that only exercise the happy path are a signal the candidate does not think about correctness seriously. Tests that cover edge cases, failure modes, and realistic scenarios are a signal that they do.

5. Did you handle scope appropriately?

This is the trap. Take-homes often have ambiguous scope, and what separates strong candidates from weak ones is the ability to recognize what matters and what does not. Over-engineering is as bad as under-engineering. Shipping a monolith when a script was asked for is a red flag.

6. Is the submission polished?

README that explains how to run the thing. Clean commit history. No debug output, no commented-out code, no "TODO fix this later" notes left in. The submission itself is a signal about how you show up to work.

7. Can you explain your decisions?

Most take-homes are followed by a discussion. "Why did you choose this architecture" and "what would you change if you had more time" are common. Candidates who cannot justify their choices lose points even when the code is fine.

Notice what is not on this list: algorithmic cleverness. Take-homes rarely reward it, and inventing complexity where none is needed is actively penalized.


The AI Tool Question (the Honest Version)

Every candidate asks: can I use AI tools on a take-home? Here is the honest answer.

Most companies assume you will

In 2026, unless the assignment explicitly says not to, interviewers assume candidates are using AI assistance. The question is not whether you used it - it is whether you used it well. A submission that is obviously a raw AI output with the candidate's name on it is easy to spot and easy to reject.

What "using AI well" means

Three things.

You understand every line. If you cannot explain what a function does or why it is structured that way, that function should not be in your submission. Take-home follow-ups routinely include "walk me through this file." Candidates who stumble on their own code because they did not write it fail these conversations.

You did not let AI pick your architecture. AI tools are good at writing code to a spec. They are bad at deciding what the spec should be. Strong candidates decide the architecture themselves, then use AI to accelerate the implementation. Weak candidates accept whatever structure the first AI prompt produced and build on it, which is usually not the right structure.

You edited. AI-generated code is verbose, tends to over-comment, and handles errors in inconsistent ways. Good candidates take the first pass and tighten it - remove unnecessary abstraction, simplify control flow, make names consistent, delete the generated comments that do not add information. The submission should read like it was written by one person, not three.

What "using AI poorly" looks like

The telltale signs that get submissions rejected:

  • Wildly inconsistent style across files
  • Over-engineered abstractions for trivial features (factory pattern for a 50-line problem)
  • Comments that narrate what the code does rather than why
  • Error handling that is everywhere or nowhere, with no clear principle
  • Test files that exercise implementation details instead of behavior
  • A README that sounds like marketing copy

Interviewers see a lot of these. They are not subtle.

The specific question: can I submit without telling them I used AI?

If the assignment says nothing about it, you do not need to disclose. If it explicitly asks you not to use AI, do not - companies that care enough to ask also tend to verify, and getting caught is immediately disqualifying. If it asks you to document what you used, document honestly. The candidates who get offers are uniformly transparent when asked.


The Scope Problem

Take-homes almost always have ambiguous scope. A prompt like "build a simple URL shortener with a REST API" could be 2 hours of work or 20. The worst thing you can do is treat it as a maximum and deliver 20 hours when 4 was expected.

Read the time estimate, and respect it

If the assignment says "we expect this to take 3-4 hours," treat that as the budget. Going wildly over shows poor time management, and - more subtly - it signals to the interviewer that this is what you would do in real work: gold-plate every task.

Aim for the smallest useful scope

Do the core feature well. Cut side quests ruthlessly. It is better to deliver a clean, tested implementation of the main requirement than a buggy implementation of every feature mentioned.

Explicitly document tradeoffs

What you chose NOT to do is almost as informative as what you did. A README section titled "Tradeoffs and things I would do with more time" is one of the highest-leverage things you can include. It shows judgment, makes the reviewer's job easier, and gives you ammunition for the follow-up discussion.

Examples of good tradeoff notes:

  • "I skipped authentication because the assignment did not specify auth requirements. In a real system I would add JWT-based auth at the API gateway."
  • "I used SQLite for simplicity. In production this would be Postgres with a connection pool."
  • "I wrote tests for the core service logic but not the HTTP handlers. With more time I would add integration tests."

Do not invent requirements

"I thought it would be cool if..." is a risky opener. Interviewers grade against the spec, not against your expansion of the spec. Extras can be good, but only when the core is solid and the extras are clearly marked as bonus.


Submission Hygiene

The things that have nothing to do with code but significantly affect whether you get to the next round.

The README is the first thing they read

It should have:

  • One-paragraph description of what the project does
  • Setup instructions that work on a fresh machine
  • How to run the app
  • How to run the tests
  • A short "Decisions" section covering the non-obvious choices
  • A "Tradeoffs" section covering what you left out and why
  • Estimated time spent (if asked)

No emojis. No "Generated with ___" footers. No inflated marketing language.

Commit history should tell a story

Small, well-named commits beat one "Initial commit" with 500 files. It does not need to be perfect, but it should look like someone building the thing incrementally, not like a dump at the end. If you used AI heavily, commit between AI-assisted passes so the history reflects real work.

Clean the repo

No IDE config files (.idea, .vscode) unless the assignment requires them. No OS junk (.DS_Store). No compiled artifacts. No commented-out code. No leftover debug print statements. Run a linter before submitting, and fix what it complains about.

Test it on a fresh machine

Clone the repo to a new directory, follow your own README, and make sure it runs. The number of submissions that fail on "does it start" is astonishing. This is the single cheapest way to catch a category of embarrassing problems.


The Debug/Review Round

Some companies now do this instead of or in addition to a take-home. You are given an existing codebase with a bug or a design problem, and your job is to find and fix it. This is harder to fake with AI tools because it requires understanding code you did not write.

What they are testing

  • Can you read unfamiliar code quickly.
  • Can you form hypotheses about where a bug might live.
  • Can you use debugging tools (prints, logs, debuggers, tests) effectively.
  • Can you explain what you are doing as you do it.

How to prepare

The single best prep for debug rounds is to contribute to open-source projects or read postmortems. Both train the skill of orienting in unfamiliar code. LeetCode does not help. Neither does building side projects in isolation.

During the round

Think out loud. Interviewers weight explanation heavily here. "I am looking at this function because the stack trace points to it, but I suspect the real issue is upstream because the input already looks wrong" is much better signal than silent typing, even if both approaches fix the bug.

Do not rush to fix. Understand the bug first. The worst outcome is patching a symptom and leaving the root cause, and then the interviewer asks "and what if the input had been X" and the fix falls apart.


Common Mistakes That Lose Offers

Things we see candidates do repeatedly that sink their chances.

  • Submitting without running the tests. Tests that fail on the reviewer's machine but passed on yours are a red flag, and missing tests entirely is worse.
  • Leaving generated boilerplate in. A fresh create-react-app default page under a "home" route is an instant mark against you.
  • Copy-pasting from AI without reading. The moment you say "I am not sure why it is structured this way" about your own code, you are in trouble.
  • Over-using design patterns. Factory/Strategy/Observer for a 200-line project signals someone who has read books but not shipped code.
  • Ignoring requirements you did not like. If the prompt says "handle concurrent updates" and your code does not, you do not get points for the features you did build.
  • Weak commit messages. "fix" and "wip" and "update" do not tell the reviewer anything. Commit messages are free signal.
  • Submitting late without communication. If you need more time, ask. Silently submitting after the deadline is worse than missing the deadline and explaining.

A Practical Checklist

Before you hit submit:

  • The core feature works
  • Edge cases are handled
  • Tests pass and cover meaningful cases
  • README is complete and the setup works on a fresh clone
  • Tradeoffs are documented
  • Commit history is reasonable
  • No generated boilerplate, debug output, or AI footers
  • Lint/format is clean
  • You can explain every file and every non-obvious decision
  • You are within the time budget (or have documented why you were not)
  • You would be comfortable showing this code to a teammate at your last job

If the last item makes you hesitate, fix what is bothering you before submitting.


The Meta-Point

The format of technical interviews is changing because AI made the old format too easy to game. The response from companies has been to move toward formats that test the things AI cannot do for you: judgment, communication, debugging unfamiliar systems, and operating under ambiguity.

The good news is that these skills are learnable, and they are also the skills that matter on the job. The candidates who adapt to the new format are not just going to pass more interviews - they are going to be better engineers for it.
