About this theme

Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility is Amazon's second newer Leadership Principle, also added in 2021. It says that because the company is big and its decisions affect customers, employees, communities, and the planet, leaders must be humble, thoughtful about even the second-order effects of their actions, and that they should start each day determined to make better, do better, and be better for customers, employees, partners, and the world. For an engineer this is the principle of thinking past the happy path of your feature to its broader consequences - security, privacy, accessibility, data handling, abuse vectors, and the long-term blast radius of decisions made at scale. In interviews this principle rewards the engineer who proactively flagged or addressed a downstream consequence others had not considered - a privacy risk in a logging change, an accessibility gap, a feature that could be abused, an environmental or cost externality at scale. It is closely related to Ownership but specifically about reaching beyond your immediate deliverable to the broader impact. The strongest answers show you noticing a second-order effect that was nobody's assigned job, taking it seriously even when it was inconvenient, and preventing real harm at scale.
