About this theme

Focus on Impact is the Meta value that most directly separates senior engineers from strong mid-level ones. The phrase Meta uses internally is to "focus on the most important problems" - the signal is leverage, not effort. Interviewers want to see that you identified the highest-impact thing you could work on, sometimes by saying no to busy work that looked productive, and that you can defend the choice with measured outcomes. Activity is cheap; choosing the right problem and proving it moved a real metric is the E5-plus bar. In the behavioral loop this shows up in both the values interview and the hiring-manager round, and it overlaps heavily with how Meta calibrates promotions - impact is the currency of the engineering ladder. Interviewers probe whether you understood the business or product context well enough to pick the right problem, whether you proactively redirected effort toward something with more leverage, and whether you can quantify the result.
