About this theme

Diversity and inclusion questions are now standard at most senior+ loops, and many companies (Microsoft, Google, Meta, Stripe) include a dedicated round explicitly. The signal interviewers want is not whether you can recite values - it's whether you've actually noticed and acted on inclusion issues in the work. The question is operational: did you change a code review practice, push back on a microaggression in the moment, redesign a meeting structure, advocate for an underrepresented teammate's idea, or make a deliberate accessibility call? The two failure modes interviewers screen for are (1) the rehearsed answer - "I believe diverse teams are stronger" with no story attached - and (2) the bystander story - "I noticed something was off but didn't say anything." Strong candidates have specific stories where they noticed something concrete (an interrupted teammate, a code review pattern, a meeting structure that excluded), they acted in the moment or shortly after, they engaged with the trade-offs and discomfort honestly, and they followed through. This theme also includes accessibility and inclusive design - whether you've made deliberate calls about screen reader support, color contrast, internationalization, or feature decisions that affect users with disabilities. At senior+ levels, accessibility is increasingly treated as part of the core craft, not a separate concern.
